Bio

Mum Locked In Castle formed past the misty Yorkshire moores in a strange place called Scarborough, late 2007.

With nothing that much to do in their first year at Hull University, the guys decided to form a band and blend in bits of everything they liked, stoner riffs, soul, jazz, prog and punk angst.

After much deliberating the band decided on the name Mum Locked In Castle, taken from a Scarborough Evening News headline, that seemed to sum up the sleepiness of this seaside ‘retreat’.

Most people don’t like this name, but we don’t really care.

The band recorded a rough four track demo to try and get more gigs, however without ay transport the guys only played in Scarborough.

At the end of their first year the band recorded and mixed their debut 6 track EP ‘Vultures’ at the University studios and released it at the end of August 2008 on iTunes, Rhapsody, Emusic and Napster, whilst also pressing 200 digipaks. The band managed to get Sonny Kay (www.sonnykay.com) to do the artwork for the EP from L.A which was nice. He has done work for bands such as The Mars Volta who are a massive influence on MLIC.

The EP didn’t make it into any national music magazines, fair play really, but it has started to trickle into some zines and into the world of radio.

Every track from the EP has been played on radio, as there was no single release the dj’s have been choosing different songs to play which shows the strength of the EP.

So far it has been played on BBC York/Humberside/Leeds/Suffolk/Essex and BBC 6 as well as Hull KCFM, Insomnia Radio UK and Phonic Radio Exeter. It has also been played on various Student stations in the UK and USA.

The band have performed live on BBC York and Hull KCFM.

Some nice things said about the EP….

‘I can’t liken your music to anything, which is why I like it’ Stuart Morrison, Insomnia Radio UK www.insomniaradio.co.uk

‘It’s like a metalised less smacked up version of leftover crack, with more riffs and a singer that can actually sing’ Andrew Culture, Editor Beat Motel www.beatmotel.co.uk

‘Vultures leaps effortlessly between everything from Incubus-like funk metal to a dirty groove that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Cancer Bats recordA Short Fanzine About Rocking Issue 23 www.myspace.com/ashortfanzineaboutrocking

Starting their second year at the University, and with the addition of a car, the band are playing up and down the country, playing to new faces in new places, and having a good time.

In November 2008 the band won the Coastival BOTB competition in Scarborough and got to play with Feeder in front of 1800 people. MLIC went down very well and sold lots of cds and tshirts which is helping to fund there 10 date Easter tour.

MLIC have recorded two new demo tracks which are up on the myspace, they are currently finishing off some more new tracks for their next release due summer 2009.

Fun, fun times indeed.
